Lake Titicaca was the most sacred body of water in the Inca Empire and now the natural separation between Peru and Bolivia; it has a surface area exceeding 8,000 square kilometres, not counting its more than 30 islands.

Not all of those islands were formed naturally, a small clump of islands where manufactured centuries ago, and continue to be maintained today by the people who reside on them. They were forced onto the lake as the Incas pushed further and further into their territory. The Uros Islands are made of reeds which grow naturally on the banks of Lake Titicaca. The reeds are matted down and added to as they disintegrate at the bottom. The islands float on the surface of the lake and the residents make their homes, their furniture and their boats out of the reeds. The Uros Indians are known for their beautiful and intricate handwork, weaving, spinning, and embroidery.

Leaving Puno in the morning you will take a short boat ride to the Uros floating reed islands.  Here your guide will talk you through the customs and lifestyle of the islands inhabitants and you will get the chance to explore and take photos. 

WHAT TO BRING:

• Hat, Sunglasses, sunscreen - This is most important as the sun here will burn you very quickly. This is due to a combination of altitude and water reflection.
• Rain coat or Poncho.
• Bottled water (you can buy extra water on the island if needed)
• 5 soles for a reed boat ride
