Travel by bus to/from Puno and Lake Titicaca!
You may have heard about Lake Titicaca, this enormous sea in the mountains, the highest navigable lake on earth. But it is just when you see it that you understand why the Incas believed that from these waters had emerged Manco Capac, the first Inca.
The striking city of Puno is your perfect starting point to visit Lake Titicaca and enjoy its many attractions. Its populations is mainly Spanish descendant and Aymara, an ancient ethnic group from the region.
Puno has a silver mining past that left many colonial nice mansions and buildings. If you walk trough its beautiful streets you can appreciate the Main Square with its Cathedral of Baroque Style, the Count Lemus balcony or the Casa del Corregidor. The city has also many wonderful view points like Kuntur Wasi, with an excellent view of Puno and Titicaca, and Puma Uta. And you should enjoy one of the many traditional celebrations Puno has throughout the year. They are charming colorful festivities full of typical dances and beautiful Andean folklorical music.
From Puno you can visit many islands in the lake. One of the most famous and interesting is Uro´s floating Islets. These are artificial floating islands made by the Uros community with plants that grow in the area. It is supposed that they started to build and live in these islets to be safe from the attacks of the Incas. You can easily get a two hour excursion to the Uro´s islets from Puno, and many tours to the other islands include a short visit to this place as well.
There are two other main islands close to Puno: Taquille and Amantani. Taquille is a stunning place with great views of the lake and friendly people. It´s a small island with a nice community of artisans that preserve ancient traditions. There are have really nice walks in the island where you can appreciate the distant Bolivian Royal Range and its gorgeous snow-capped peaks.
On Amantanti Island you´ll also find friendly people with lots of amazing traditions. It is usually a place to stay overnight, so prepare for the magic of its sunset. One of the most attractive feature of the island are is the highest points of the islands: Pachatata (father earth) and Pachamama (mother earth) that offer unique views of the Island and also have some interesting ruins in the area.
