Take a bus to/from Paracas & Ballestas Is.
The unique Paracas peninsular is one of the best marvels to see when you visit Peru. The peninsular is just a few hours from Lima and a Green Toad Bus pass gets you there.
Located near the city of Pisco on the coast of Peru, the Paracas Reserve is a desert-like peninsular that hosts many natural attractions and is your port of disembarkation to visit the Ballestas Islands. You can travel inside this peninsular and visit the ruins of an ancient pre-Inca civilization, the Paracas.
The area became the centre of worldwide attention in 2007 because of a tremendous earthquake registering 8 on the Richter scale that almost all but destroyed the city of Pisco. Unfortunately it is estimated that the reconstruction is going to take more than 20 years.
Despite the recent disaster, the Paracas Reserve remains a worthwhile attraction for the visitor and a great spot for backpackers in Peru. The Cathedral is one of the most beautiful places around Paracas. It is a huge natural rock structure which can be viewed from nearby. Even though it was slightly damaged by the last earthquake, it is still an impressive place and deserves a visit.
And finally one of the most fascinating attractions are the Ballestas Islands. Inside the Paracas Reserve you will take a tour to the Islands, and enjoy the wonderful scenery. The Ballestas Islands are teeming with hundreds of sea birds and sea lions which keep the cameras clicking over during your boat trip. In the past, the Ballestas Islands were highly visited for commercial reasons because of the "guano" (bird excrement) production. Nowadays guano is still extracted but only every ten years. Another interesting site enjoyed on the boat trip is the Chandelier, an intriguing figure that can be seen in the sand on one of the islands.
Hop with the toad and take a bus to the Paracas peninsular to see the Ballestas Islands!
