The Inca Capital of Cusco, the navel of the earth as its name suggests in local Quechua. Cuzco is a city where history abounds in Inca foundations built upon by the Spanish conquerors. You will need at least 2 whole days to see Cusco and its nearby surrounds, but be warned, it is hard to leave, and why should you leave so soon when one of the world's truly marvelous sites, Machu Picchu, is only a train ride away, or take a 4 day hike on the famous Inca trail or Lares Trek. From Cusco you board your overnight bus to Puerto Maldonado.

Native animals and tropical settings await you as you navigate the Madre de Dios River on your way to the Jungle lodge. This 3 day trip will take you on a journey to discover the secrets of the Peruvian Amazon as you look for giant otters, monkeys, caiman, and more!
Day 1 Puerto Maldonado to Jungle-Lodge
You will be met at the Puerto Maldonado bus terminal and taken to our local office to wait for the rest of the group to arrive. There you'll be able to rest, have a snack, coffee and use WIFI internet. Around noon, once the whole group has arrived, you'll transfer to the boat on the Madre de Dios River for a one hour boat ride to your jungle lodge.
After a refreshing welcome drink and a short rest you will meet with your guide followed by an introduction walk around the lodge and its trails. Winding past giant Kapok trees, walking palms and strangler figs while being dazzled by the sounds of native birds. Return to your bungalow for a rest. Before dinner you may choose to take a walk with your guide and experience the jungle as it transforms from day into night making way for nocturnal animals and birds especially adapted for the dark. Return to the dinning hall with your guide for your first dinner in the rainforest and enjoy a typical meal from this region. After dinner you may return to your bungalow or socialise with other guests.
Day 2 Jungle-Lodge
After breakfast you will take a walk on trails through trees of heights in access of 45 meters and over 300 years old while the guide helps you identify the flora and fauna by sight and sound. You will arrive at your first platforms located 15 and 25 meters high above a small collpa, in the branches of an old fig tree accessed by a suspension bridge while you explore the amazing structure of this tree and the wildlife that live in and around it. Continue your walk into the Taricaya reserve towards the Canopy platform, the highest tree platform in the Amazon rainforest. Located 45 meters up an ancient Kapok tree and connected by a 90-meter long suspension bridge. Catch a glimpse of flying Macaws, parrots Toucans or the infamous Harpy eagle; the views from this platform are truly unforgettable!
Continue into the reserve until you reach the animal rescue centre where you will encounter many different wild animals including a jaguar, Puma, toucans, macaws, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, jaguarondi, bush dog, tapirs and more. These animals are in the process of rehabilitation before being released back into the wild. Stop off at the Butterfly house before returning to the lodge for lunch. Take a rest after lunch before venturing off on the 25min walk to the Agroforestry farm and visit the reforestation projects of mahogany, cedar, cocoa, coffee and tropical flowers. Visit the Taricaya turtle project and its artificial beaches. Return to the lodge in your own inflatable boat with the opportunity to see turtles, monkeys, herons and other birds with a beautiful backdrop of the sunset over the river. Take a rest before you finish the day?s activities with a caiman search along the rivers edge in a motorboat under moonlight. Search for white caiman, black caiman and spectacle caiman as they lay along the rivers banks at night.
Day 3 Jungle lodge to Puerto Maldonado
Waking early you set off on the return river journey to Puerto Maldonado where you have a free day before your return night bus. You will be dropped off at the office where you can rest, refresh yourself and use the Wi-Fi. You have the option of visiting the Puerto Maldonado city centre on your own today and exploring a few of the interesting sights of this jungle city by motortaxi at an additional cost. Choose to have lunch in town, take a stroll through the local markets where you will find everything from fish, meat and fruits to local arts and medicines or make your own way up to the Obelisk and admire the scenic view from above. In time for your bus departure, return to the office to get transferred to the bus terminal and catch your return overnight bus to Cuzco.

This is for travellers who like backpacking, staying in basic accommodation, and don't mind roughing it a bit. Do you have the patience for real third world travel experiences?
This trip will involve hot & humid weather; the presence of mosquitoes; and basic accommodation at an isolated lodge with mosquito netting, & cold showers (refreshing).
Altough we beleive this trip is fantastic value in Peru you will have a better time if you understand that things do not always run to schedule and like you are used to in the first world; we advertise this as a backpacker trip.
Upon arrival to Cuzco in the early morning, your trip will come to an end. Please make your own way to the accommodation of your choice.
