Frequently Asked Questions
By reading the following you may find the answers you are looking for!
Q1: How does a bus pass work? Is the bus pass for local buses or is this a proper tour bus where someone will be looking after us?
A: You travel independently, meaning that there won't be someone with you while you are travelling. A bus pass is in between an organised tour and independent travel, long distance transport and some included activities are organised for you, but you will have to get yourself to/from terminals & accommodation. Accommodation is up to you to organize, but we have recomended hostels in which you can reserve through us.
Q2: Will we be told where to go to make sure we get our buses, tours, etc or do we always have to check-in somewhere to get our tickets and tours?
A: Yes, all terminal addresses and meeting points information are supplied to you. In most cases with the tours you will be picked up from your lodging, but sometimes you will have to make your own way to start. For your transport and tours you will recieve HOP INSTRUCTIONS which has all the information you will need to get to the places you need to be. In some cases you will be supplied reservation numbers which you will have to show at the ticket counters or to the tour operators, and sometimes you just show your passport for the tickets or we send you a bus voucher.
Q3: How safe is it to travel on the bus at night time through South America as I have heard it is dangerous?
A: It is either the cheap or unauthorized bus companies that make travel dangerous in these countries. The companies we use are the best on offer and pride themselves on their safety records. Many of them have GPS tracking, and change drivers regularly to keep sharp eyes on the road. Safety is taken seriously!
Q4: Will we need to know Spanish or Portuguese to get onto the buses, trains etc?
A. Most of the places you can get by with just English as they are used to travellers. While travelling with our bus passes everything is straight forward, you go to the ticket office in the terminals and show them your reservation number and identification and you are presented with your ticket, you must be at the terminals plenty of time before your departure, which will ensure that you can take your time understanding where to go, and what to do. No less than 40min before departure is recommended. The places where you will be staying can help you with getting to the terminals, and when getting off the bus, just having an address of your hotel/hostel to show a taxi driver is enough. All our tour operators speak English (except sometimes in Uyuni Salt Flats).
Q5: Once we purchase a package, what happens and how do we start our package?
A: You will be sent detailed instructions. You just need to download them or print them out and follow them as you travel. You will be supplied with all the information you need to complete your trip.
Q6: What if I want to change my travel dates or activities?
We understand that things can change, perhaps you like a place more than you thought and want to stay a few days longer or the opposite and want to leave earlier! At Green Toads Bus we offer you the flexibility to make changes to your pre-booked schedule, all we ask from you is for 24 hours notice and we will endeavour to change your next transport or activity to the next available option if this is possible. See our Term & Conditions for full details. If it is within 24 hours then sometimes the easiest and quickest way to make those changes is actually via you! Sometimes bus companies will only allow a change in person and as you are there at the time then this is the best way to do it! We will support you throughout should this be the case and where we can we will make the change on your behalf if the operating company allows us to.
