Destination Iquique
Travel to Iquique on your Bus Pass
Most backpackers travel by bus to Iquique from San Pedro if they are travelling from the south or a bus from Arica if coming from Peru. Iquique is a primary port city in Chile, serving as the capital of the nation's northern most region and a great place to break up a long bus journey.
Even though the city was founded by the Spanish during the 16th century, there exists proof of habitation in the region by the Chango civilization dating back to 7000 BC. During the colonial period, Iquique belonged to the Vice-royalty of Peru and continued to be part of Peruvian territory 'till the end of the nineteenth century when Chile gained the land during a conflict famously known as the War of the Pacific.
Today, Iquique has developed into a commercial center as well as a tourist base for beach getaways, explorations within the desert, and archaeological excursions. Iquique is renowned for it's excellent weather which further contributes to it's value as a beach resort. If all you wish to do is take it easy, and swim among mild waves then you have found yourself in the ideal place. The more popular, and most significant beach, is Playa Cavancha, however, if you are hunting for a less busy location check out Playa Brava. All the beach locations here fill-up during the peak season which lasts from December through March.
In the centre of town you will find the pleasant Plaza Prat - this plaza is among the built treasures of North Chile. The plaza features a vintage clock tower and the nearby theater dates from the 1800s; in addition you will discover the reconditioned Casino Espanol constructed soon after the turn of the century. You might like to also browse the Museo Regional which exhibits pre-inca mummies, animal fetuses as well as several human skulls, which may sound a little morbid but is also an interesting glimpse of the areas history. Paragliding is extremely good in Iquique with the town receiving consistent winds to practice the sport on most days, an awesome activity to try while you're in town as well as an amazing way to get wonderful views of this coastline.
