Most backpackers travel by bus to Iquique from San Pedro if they are travelling from the south or a bus from Arica if coming from Peru. Iquique is a primary port city in Chile, serving as the capital of the nation's northern most region and a great place to break up a long bus journey.

Even though the city was founded by the Spanish during the 16th century, there exists proof of habitation in the region by the Chango civilization dating back to 7000 BC.
