This big cheap city is an amazing destination located in the middle of a valley and surrounded by beautiful mountains. La Paz is the highest capital city in the world and is one of the top destinations when traveling in South America.
La Paz is one of two capitals of Bolivia and has many historical attractions like the San Francisco Cathedral, Quemado Palace and Plaza Murillo. Take a nice walk through the middle of the city on the main street called El Prado, where you can admire great gardens and colonial buildings. It also hosts the financial area of the city and most the important modern buildings.
You may find it a little hard to walk, as there are rises and slopes everywhere, but you´ll enjoy every little nook and cranny of La Paz.
You can travel round La Paz cheaply and easily by taxi or by bus and there are many one day excursions available like the Valley of the Moon with its impressive rock formations or the Devil´s Tooth, ideal for trekking. Close to the city of La Paz there´s one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Bolivia called Tiwanaku, where an ancient pre-Inca culture developed. It is a fabulous place where you can walk through the ruins and visit the well put together museums. And If you have a couple of days in the area, you can visit Coroico which is located just a few hours by bus from La Paz. Coroico is a beautiful place in a jungle area full of nice hostels and pleasant walks.
Finally, be certain not to skip the many street markets which seem to engulf the city of La Paz. The street markets are one of the major attractions when traveling in Bolivia. On Sagarnaga Street you can find hundreds of llama or alpaca sweaters, and charming silver arts & crafts. Close to this area is the interesting witches market where you can get odd products like llama fetuses, herbs and folk remedies. There´s also a fantastic market in a place called El Alto, on top of La Paz. It is a huge market where they sell anything you can imagine.
