Exploring the wine country of Argentina
Argentina is the largest wine producer in South America and is the world's fifth largest, so for dedicated wine lovers it is well worth exploring. The country is enormous so it's a good idea to do some research into the wine regions before deciding exactly where to go. The majority of Argentina's wine production takes place in the far west of the country where vineyards nestle close to the majestic peaks of the Andes.
Mendoza

The mecca of good Argentine wine is the area surrounding the city of Mendoza, which is located in the foothills of the Andes and acts as a good base from which to visit the vineyards and experience some great wine tasting. There are over 1,000 wine producers in the area so visitors are spoiled for choice. The dominant grape grown here is Malbec, a French varietal that has blossomed in the region since its introduction in the mid-1850s, and Argentina is the world's biggest producer of Malbec.
The wineries - known in Argentina as bodegas - offer tours of their facilities and explain the process from vine to fermentation to bottle. When it's time for tasting the products, a number of reds and whites will be available. If you are travelling to Mendoza on a Green Toad trip you will have a guided bike tour of some of the wine region included. The area is flat so the ride is enjoyable, lunch is included and the trip offers more than just wine tasting.

If wineries are particularly your thing, then you may wish to spend more time exploring a particular region in depth before continuing onto your next destination, and renting a car is an option; there is a National car rental outlet near the airport. Many wine lovers prefer to savor the liquid before spitting it out while others believe that to get the full appreciation the wine should be swallowed. If the latter preference is selected it's a good idea not to drive!
Lying to the north of Mendoza are the vineyards of San Juan and La Rioja. San Juan is the second largest wine producer in Argentina, and while La Rioja is considerably smaller it has the longest continuous history of producing wine in the country.
Other Attractions
The Mendoza area has attractions for visitors other than the wineries, so when you feel that you just cannot consume any more wine why not enjoy a paragliding tour, or take an exciting rafting trip down the Mendoza River. If that sounds a bit too exciting, also available are guided treks into the beautiful foothills of the Andes that are more relaxing.
