You need to be at the group meeting point at 8:30am. Once the 4x4 vehicle is loaded and you leave for Santa Rosa de Yacuma (approx 3 hrs). Afetr an included lunch you will depart by motor canoe towards your pampas lodge. The journey takes about 3 or 4 hours and along the way your guide will point out pink river dolphins, monkeys, turtles, caiman and many birds.
Refreshments will be served on arrival and afterwards the group decides where they want to go to watch sunset. The 'sunset bar' is a popular choice and provides great views. Return to camp for the evening meal after which a night boat trip is optional for spotting nocturnal animals such as caimans and alligators.
After breakfast in the lodge you set off on a walk to the pampas to search small lagoons and wetlands for wildlife including anacondas and other snakes/ There is some interesting plant life in the area and classic pampas views so have your camera charged and ready. After returning to the lodge for lunch you will set off in the motor canoes looking for pink river dolphins (almost guaranteed!). The dolphins are very social and if you wish you can swim in this area and get up close with them. Return to camp for some earned free time to relax, your evening meal, and maybe your guide will take you to the sunset bar again if your group wishes.
After breakfast in the lodge its back onto the canoes again to visit small islands with forested areas. You will spend some time fishing for piranha with chunks of meat as bait. If you catch any you can have these cooked up with your lunch to try!
Back at the lodge you have time for lunch before your return trip by motor canoe to Santa Rosa de Yacuma to meet with your jeep for the trip back to Rurrenabaque maybe spotting some more animals on the way.
Is this trip for you?
Although you are heading to the Bolivian Pampas, this trip is not for people who like to be pampered! This is for travellers who like backpacking, staying in basic accommodation, and don't mind roughing it a bit. Do you have the patience for real third world travel experiences?
This trip may involve delays in departure times in Rurrenabaque and other destinations; hot & humid weather; mosquitoes; and basic accommodation at an isolated lodge with mosquito netting, cold showers & a basic mattress with sheets. You will also need to make your own way via taxi to the airports, hotel and meeting points. Your guide will have little to no english, but the incredible things he will show you will speak for them-self.
In Bolivia you will have a better time if you understand that things do not always run to schedule and rarely reach 1st world standards; and also by accepting any problems that arise as part of the experience!
