Pantanal Ecological Expedition
In Spanish and Portuguese the word Pantanal (pantano) mean's swamp, but in this case it is a huge wetland in the centre of South America. The Pantanal covers 230,000 sq km's, of which 130,000 sq km's are in Brazil with the remainder being shared between Paraguay and Bolivia. The Brazilian Pantanal is split between two province's; Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, with the latter only being formed in the 1970's from the original Mato Grosso State. It is said that the Pantanal has the largest concentration of fauna in the world but it still comes down to luck for what you will get to see.
From Campo Grande or Bonito you will head out onto a 2 night, 3 day excursion into the largest inland wetland in the world, a land of hearty people and considerable visable wildlife. The trip enters the Pantanal from the Mato Grosso do Sul Province, in the southern part of the Brazillian Pantanal.
Pantanal Included Activities
The trip includes 5 Activities acommpanied by an English speaking guide to explain the things you will see:
Boat Trip - On the boat trip you will look for Black Howler Monkeys, Caiman Crocodiles, Toucans, Macaws and various other birds. The trip will last for approx 2 hours and we will have a guide with us through out to explain the flora and fauna.
Piranha Fishing - Using meat as bait you will try your luck at snagging one of these carnivorous fish. Don't worry - the guide will get it off the hook for you and show you the teeth of this notorious fish. You might even get to try it for super!
Trekking - walk various treks through the wetlands and the area surrounding the farm in search of wildlife and to learn about local medicines. Suitable for all fitness levels.
Jeep Safari - On this safari we will be looking for Caiman's, Marsh Deer's, Capybara (which are the largest rodents in the world) and with extreme luck, the chance to see a Jaguar!
Night Walk - Nightfall brings out a different types of animals. Follow your guide in search of these nocturnal critters and hear the sounds of the Pantanal at night.
Facilities and Accommodation
At the ranch you sleep in hammocks (provided) in a large dorm style room which is covered in mosquito netting. The Ranch has toilets, showers, dining room and kitchen. You are able to upgrade to dorm beds. All of the food from the first nights dinner to the last days lunch is included as part of the tour and is all prepared for you.
You can buy soft drinks, beers and snacks. Please note that at the farm it is better if you take drinks with you as prices are generally more expensive. However at the Lodge the owners prefer that you buy drinks from their bar.
