Travel Insurance for South America is a must! Not because South America is exceptionally dangerous or that medical care is completely unavailable, but simply because you need that 'just in case' plan and making sure you have travel insurance for South America helps provide that!

South America is a large and diverse continent and each countries resources and infrastructure varies greatly.  Take Bolivia for example: if you have the misfortune of getting a nasty tummy bug, believe us when we say that you want to be able to have the peace of mind to go to a nice hospital!

If you have South American travel insurance then you have that peace of mind and that extra assistance should things go wrong or not according to plan.

Hmmm... Iīm not convinced I need it.....

Well here is a little story from a Green Toad team member who went on a recent trip. Most people think about getting travel insurance right before hoping on the plane before their trip, and so did we in the past. But because of the experience of one of our team members, we now know getting it at the moment you book and pay for your travel is a good idea.

We were sending our products manager 'Rick' on a little research trip through Peru, and flights were booked, accommodation sorted, and as usual Travel Insurance waiting to be booked the day before departure. Then 'Ricks' wisdom teeth began to give him a lot of grief a week before travel and emergency surgery was required.

Needless to say he wasn't in the mood to jet to altitude quite so soon after surgery and because travel insurance was not purchased he lost his return flight tickets and some of the pre-paid accommodation which was a nasty knock to finances.

Anyway lesson learned and we all now know its best to get the insurance as soon as flights are bought.

Reasons why consider Travel Insurance for South America

  • Cancellation: It's no fun if you fall ill before you leave and can not go on your trip. To claim though, you have to buy your insurance policy when you buy your trip. Not all insurance policies cover cancellation, so please read the policy wording relevant to you carefully.
  • Lost or Stolen Gear: most travel insurance policies have a per-item value limit - make sure its high enough to cover your gear or choose a policy that allows you to increase the limit.
  • Medical expenses over and above evacuation: check that your cover includes emergency treatment while away and transport to bring you home - remembering that insurance providers will usually insist on getting you home as soon as you are fit enough to travel.
  • Adventurous Activities: look carefully at what your policy covers - you may find that you are not covered to do all of the adventurous activities that you are planning while you're away.
  • Personal Liability: Accidents happen. If it's found to be your fault and someone decides to sue you, you want to be covered.
